HELSINKI, July 24 (Xinhua) -- While real forest fires have notbeen a problem this summer in Finland Cheap Ryan Switzer Jersey , Finnish Economic DevelopmentMinister Mika Lintila has been trying hard over the weekend toextinguish a fire caused by looming EU restrictions on forestindustry.


The European Parliament Environmental Committee decided recentlythat the use of forest should remain at the level of 2000-2012. Theproposal discourages Finnish plans that envisage a much higherlevel of usage.


Currently, there are several major biomass and pulp plantprojects in Finland that still await final go-ahead by theinvestors, who are pinning their hope on the expansion of theforest sector.


Contributing 20 percent of the Finnish GDP, the forest industryis playing a key role in the economic strategy of the Finnishgovernment. The government has planned to increase the use offorest by 30 percent by 2030.


Talking on national broadcaster Yle late Sunday Cheap Jourdan Lewis Jersey , Lintila said hestill did not believe the committee's view would emerge as thefinal EU stand. "But if that would happen, Finland would purchaseforest usage rights from countries that would be willing to sellthem", he said.


Lintila said the impact of the envisaged increased cutdown offorests on the Finnish GDP would amount to seven or eight billioneuros, whereas the purchase of forest usage rights would be ten ortwenty million euros only.

Heidi Hautala, a Member of the European Parliament from theGreen Party, told Yle that the direction of the EU climate policymay not have been understood in Finland. Hautala said she does notunderstand why tax payers' money should be used to purchase theusage rights.

Liisa Jaakonsaari, a Member of the European Parliament from theSocial Democratic Party, told Yle that Finns perceived the EUcommittee view as unjust on the grounds that Finland has taken goodcare of its forests. But Jaakonsaari implied that the currententhusiasm about biofuels may encounter with difficulties in thefuture.


Sirpa Pietikainen, a conservative party MEP Cheap Sean Lee Jersey , said that the EUcommittee view was not presented "just to annoy Finland". "We havenow such a shortage of time to fight against the climate change,"Pietikainen noted.
